This bass lesson will go over the basics to play slap bass. Playing slap bass is a very percussive technique that’s useful to know. Here are some tips to get you started!
What is Slap Bass?
Slap bass is used in all genres, especially jazz music. Slap bass involves pulling and releasing the strings as you play so they slap against the freeboard, adding a very unique sound to your playing.
No matter what genre of music you play, knowing this technique will be very helpful as a bassist. Playing slap bass is all in the angle of your thumb, with a bit of practice, you should have it down pretty quickly!
Before you start trying to play, it’s important to know that there are two types of styles: “traditional” slap bass and double thumping. There are also some other variations.
Double Thumping
Muted Palm Slaps
Tips & Tricks
Obviously, practice is the only thing that can make you better at something, but practicing correctly is something many players fail to do. Make sure to take it slow at first, learn the right positioning and technique, and only speed it up once you’ve mastered it slowly.
And, a very important tip: don’t overdo it! Slap bass is a great way to add a unique sound to your playing every so often, not all the time! Make sue you also master picking and fingerstyle, don’t just focus on one technique. It’s important you know as many styles as possible on bass to make your playing as broad as possible.
Once you get the basics down, the best way to practice anything is to apply it to actual songs. This helps as it gives you a reference as to what your playing should sound like, and it will also help you work on your timing and technique!
