Bass palm muting and frethand mutes are essential techniques that every bass player needs to get down. Use these tips and tricks to make learning as easy as possible!
Fretting Hand Mutes
To play a fretting hand mute, simply lay your fingers across the strings and pick. You still want to get some pitch, but you want the sound to be very muffled.
Don’t put too much pressure on the strings or you’ll end up fretting notes (or completely silencing them). Just lightly rest your fingers across the strings.
Picking Hand Mutes
There are multiple techniques that you can use with your picking hand to mute your bass. Palm muting on bass will require you to lay the side of your hand across the strings near the bridge. You can also use a piece of sponge or another material and put it underneath your bass strings to mute them.
Tips & Tricks
- As with everything, practice makes perfect! Take your time and practice both left and right hand muting to make sure you can play them correctly.
- Muting is a way to add percussiveness to your sound and can be used in any genre, but you want to make sure that you don’t mute so much as to silence the strings. You still want to hear the different pitches of the strings. Being able to adjust how much you mute the strings is also important.
