Hear are some great left-hand exercises for bass players. This bass lesson will go over some fretting hand techniques and speed warmups.
Fretting Hand Practice
Warmups & Exercises
These warmups and exercises go from beginning level to advanced. Start slow and make sure you get the technique right first. Speed will come with practice. Don’t focus on playing quickly at the cost of good technique. Make sure that all notes sound out clearly. If you get buzzing or skipped notes, slow down and get it right.
It’s more important to play something great at slower speeds than very poorly at quicker tempos.
Basic Exercises
These exercises give each finger a fret. Your index should play the first fret, middle the second, ring the third, and pinky the fourth. You can also shift these exercises up on the fretboard, just make sure to use all four fingers.

The above exercise should also be played backwards once you play all the way up, like so:

This version will help build your pinky finger strength since it will be playing the thicker strings:

Tips & Tricks
- Make sure to use all four fingers evenly.
- When playing bass, always give each finger a fret and make sure to practice shifting (rather than using just your index finger to try and fret all the notes).
- Get in the habit of leaving each finger in place on the frets until you need to move them to a new note.
